Landscape Photography Tips & Tricks Look For Unique Perspectives

Look for unique perspectives - Get down low, climb up high and look for interesting angles

Taking photographs from different perspectives is a great way to give your photos a unique look. Get up high or down low. Try shooting from above or below the subject to create an interesting look.  You can see our very own Kate here, perched up high, looking to see what perspective she can capture from above the landscape.

Don't be afraid to move around the landscape and experiment with different angles. We will often do a scoping session at a new location where we roam around hand holding the camera to find the right perspective.  Important to note, that once we have found the right spot and an interesting angle, we always use a tripod to take the actual photo.  This is to ensure your image is sharp and can be blown up to a large format if required.

Experiment with different lenses.  Try wide-angle lenses and telephoto lenses to capture different perspectives and styles of imagery.  Try different distances. Moving closer or further away from the subject can change the way your photo looks.

Play with foreground and background. You can use the foreground and background elements to draw attention to the subject.  You can see Kate in the image below getting up close to the rocks at Karlu Karlu to create an interesting perspective.

Below is an example of four images shot in the same location, using foreground elements to create interesting and unique landscape photographs.  Taking photographs at different times of the day, is also a great way to capture different light patterns and shades.  Don't be afraid to visit the location several times over several days to see what the light changes can do.  A cloudy sky will cast shadows in a different way to a clear sky.  Don't be in a rush to take a photo.  Slow down, sit and connect with the country you are standing on and see what inspiration comes your way.
