What is Digital Art?

A digital art print is an electronic file that you purchase and download at checkout to print yourself.  This is one of the most affordable ways to own great quality art as you save money when you print it yourself. Depending on the quality of your home printer, you can print it at home or take it to your local print specialist.  I've always used professional printing labs but lately, I've trialled using Officeworks Poster Print Service and I'm really happy with the quality.

Digital prints save you money as you can often print high quality artworks yourself for a fraction of the normal cost.

Example of Digital Printing

One of the main advantages of digital printing is you get the choice to print your artwork on a variety of media.  Print and frame it, print it on a canvas, put it on a mug or a t-shirt, your options are only limited by your own imagination.

Types of Digital Printing

The most common type of digital printing is inkjet printing and involves droplets of ink being placed on paper, canvas or material.  Direct to garment printing is when they use inkjet printing to print an image on fabric, like the the t-shirt above.  Wide Format Printing is used for large scale printing.

I could go on and on about printing methods but my point is, when you purchase a digital artwork, the options are endless and you get the power and control to print a piece that you love.

How Digital Art is Made

Digital art is created using technology as the primary medium. It involves using digital tools, software, and devices to produce artwork. There are several computer programs around that can make digital art.  I personally use Photoshop as it's a software I've used in my photography work and as a graphic designer.

Will Digital Art Be Replaced by AI?

I don't think it will replace Digital Art but I do think it is making it easier for your average person to create, which in my opinion is great!  Anytime more people are engaging with their creativity, the world is richer for it.  I don't subscribe to being afraid of new technology, I think no one can create the same art as you.  No one can be inside another's mind and extract creativity.  When you buy digital art from me, you can't get that from anywhere else! You're buying art that is unique to my creativity regardless of what medium is used to create it and that's pretty cool, when you stop and think about it.

I think AI is changing how we digital artists work.  Years ago, I'd sketch, scan, layer and create artworks that took long periods of time to create.  I have over the years exhibited several digital artworks but only recently developed the confidence to start to sell my digital artworks

Fast forward to today and I use AI in my digital artworks to fasten up the process using text prompts to help with creating.  In my experience the AI isn't yet up to scratch and artworks often need touching up to finalise.  While that can change and improve with time, I think as a digital artist, you still need to have artistic merit, which lies in the concept, skill, and expression of the artist, not solely in the medium used to create it.

Why Digital Art is Important To Me

For me digital art is a creative outlet, a place to express my creativity and to unwind at the end of the day.  Most evenings I sit on the couch and create art for hours and it's something I love doing.  Not all artworks make it to the website.

I've spent my entire career working in Emergency Services and whilst I love helping others and feel like service is part of who I am, however, it's a pretty full on role at times and I'm often left with high levels of stress and trauma to process. For me digital art is honestly a stress reliever.  It's calming for my soul and I hope if you've read this far, you'll spend some time looking through my digital art collection.  Get in touch via our contact page or social media channels to let me know what you think or drop a comment below.
