Using a Wide Angle Lens in Landscape Photography

Using a wide angle lens in landscape photography can add depth and dimension to your photos. It allows you to capture more of the scene in one shot and creates a sense of scale.  Kate's go to lens, is the 17-40mm Canon Wide Angle Lens.  You can check out Canon's range of wide angle lenses here

A wide angle lens also exaggerates the distance between objects, creating a dramatic effect, which you can see in The Ruins image below when you look at the distance from the viewer to the building.  The distance between the clouds is also adding to the dramatic effect.

Additionally, it can help you showcase the foreground while still capturing the background, which you can see in Karlu Karlu Tree below;

Overall, using a wide angle lens can enhance the visual impact of your landscape photos and help you capture stunning and unique images.  Experiment with it.  Hire or borrow a wide angle lens to head out and play with, before you commit to buying one. Make sure you use a tripod to ensure your images are razor sharp.  Check out our blog post on Using a Tripod in Landscape Photography for more tips.
