It was another rainy afternoon in the middle of winter on the South Coast of New South Wales in Australia when I was looking for something to occupy our five year old at home. Whilst the world outside was wrapped in a blanket of grey, I sat together with our daughter listening to the rhythmic sound of raindrops tapping against the glass. "What can we play Mumma?", she said. With a pad of coloured paper in front of me I remembered an age-old craft that has transcended generations, the paper fortune teller.

We sat together breaking down the art of making a fortune teller into bite sized pieces. The cutest little hands next to me folded, creased, and figured out how to place her fingers and thumbs into the back of the paper folds and move them to create the magic of a fortune teller. Check out the link above if you would like to learn how to make a paper fortune teller. It was a flash back to my own childhood in the 80's for me. I also found that this simple afternoon activity sparked a journey of creativity that would later inspire a new series of printable wall art prints.
The Birth of a Unique Wall Art Idea: From Craft to Art
The paper fortune teller, with its simple geometric folds and the promise of hidden messages, is a symbol of childhood curiosity and the beauty of unpredictability. It was during this beautiful moment, watching our child’s eyes light up with anticipation as she revealed each fortune, that the idea for a new wall art collection was born. I wanted to create a pastel geometric series of wall art prints that would keep you gazing at them in curiosity, wonder and awe. I wanted them to feel clam and free much like the mood of the winter afternoon.
As a mum, I’ve always been drawn to the magical joy that children bring to the world. Their imagination knows no bounds, and their ability to find delight in the simplest things is something we, as adults, often forget. The paper fortune teller reminded me of the power of play and the importance of nurturing creativity in our children. It was a moment that I wanted to capture and share with others, not just as a memory, but as something tangible that could bring the same joy and connection into other homes.

Exploring the Concept: Geometric Patterns and Pastel Hues
Inspired by the randomness and infinite possibilities of the paper fortune teller, I began to experiment with geometric patterns. Each fold of the paper, each crease that transformed a flat sheet into a three-dimensional object, became an opportunity to iterate on an artistic process. The idea of iterating on a single concept, of taking something familiar and exploring its many facets, became the foundation of this wall art collection.
Geometric patterns have always held a certain allure for me. There’s something mesmerizing about the symmetry, the balance, and the way simple shapes can come together to form something complex and beautiful. In this collection, I’ve taken those geometric principles and combined them with the soft, soothing tones of pastel colours, creating pieces that are both visually striking and calming.
Each print in the collection plays with different forms—triangles, squares, circles, and they are individually arranged in patterns that are reminiscent of the folds and creases of the paper fortune teller. The use of pastel colours was intentional as these hues evoke a sense of tranquility and are often associated with childhood, making them perfect for kids' decor. Whether it’s the soft blush of pink, the gentle whisper of mint, or the calming blue of a summer sky, each color was chosen to create an atmosphere of peace and serenity.
Here is the end result. I hope you like them.
